How To-42: "How to Recognize the Symptoms of an STD"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

How would you know if you have an STD? This article provides some information on recognizing the symptoms. As with any health information, you should not self-diagnose but should seek advice and diagnosis from your trusted health professional.

Steps

  1. Check for any abnormalities with your body. Most symptoms of STDs are concentrated around the genital and mouth region.[1] Consider the following possible symptoms:
    • Feeling sick all the time and discomfort in genital region
    • Bumps, warts or dots on the genitals, in the genital region; possibly some itchiness
    • Burning sensation when urinating
    • Smelly, discolored discharge from penile or vaginal region
    • Cold sores around mouth
    • Genital rash and subsequent feet and hands rash
    • Loss of appetite
    • Yellowing of skin and whites of eyes
    • Pain in pelvic area[2]

  2. Examine your body and look for these things.
  3. Tell your parents or guardians if you are unable to seek medical attention by yourself. Do not be afraid to tell them and to seek help. Keeping it a secret will only damage your health in the long-term and things might get worse.
  4. See your health professional.

Tips

  • Be comfortable with telling the person you tell. A nurse, parent, teacher or counselor are all good possible choices.
  • Make sure they will be able to help you.
  • Keep your own well-being in mind
  • Don't just blurt it out.

Warnings

  • Your body can be harmed by having an STD - seek professional help. Untreated STDs may cause infertility (inability to have children later), increase your chances of some cancers and makes you a risk to future partners.[3]
  • If you do not practice safe sex, others can be infected.

Man survives 100 hours with cigarettes, paper napkins and urine!

A newspaper report says that a man who was caught in the wreckage of the recent Chinese earthquake survived 100 hours just by eating cigarettes and paper napkins and drinking his own urine (‘Dinamalar’, Tamil daily, Madurai, May 26, 2008).

Obviously the man had a will to live. First he tore his shirt and tied the injured parts with it, which reduced his pain to some extent. Then he thought of how to save himself till rescue comes. He found in his pant packet half a pack of cigarettes and paper napkins. He started eating first a small quantity of tobacco in cigarettes at a time and then paper nap-kins. To avoid dehydration, he decided to drink his own urine. With great difficulty, he removed his shoe and used it to collect his urine and drank it.

Actually, nearby ten other people were also caught in the debris and were unable to extricate themselves. Unfortunately, they did not take his advice and started dying one after the other. When finally the military rescue team reached them, all of them were found dead, except the man who ate cigarettes and paper napkins and drank his own urine..

The rescue team gave the lone survivor first aid and then admitted him in an hospital. He is out of danger now and is convalescing fast.

How To-41: "How to Improve Your Health as a Diabetic"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

This is not a cure but rather tips for improving and preserving the health of a diabetic. According to health experts, type 1 diabetes cannot be cured, because it is a form of pancreatic dysfunction, which results when insulin producing cells cannot make enough insulin to process glucose in the body. Type 2 diabetes, however, can usually be prevented or controlled by diet and exercise, because Type 2 diabetes is typically the result of insulin resistance, which is caused by physical inactivity and poor diet.

Steps

  1. Drink an ampalaya (bitter gourd/bitter melon) tea. It is well known for helping diabetic patients to maintain their blood sugar at healthy levels. Banaba tea is one of the best sources of plantisul (plant insulin). Consult your endocrinologist, diabetes educator, or dietitian before beginning this or any alternative treatment.
  2. Maintain a healthy diet. Follow the advice of your doctor or diabetes educator.
  3. Exercise. If it is medically safe, start exercising 30 minutes a day. A 30-minute walk at a good pace for the diabetic individual will help to reduce blood sugar, and possibly the amount of medication needed. Have a plan for exercise when taking insulin or using blood sugar lowering drugs, because exercise lowers blood glucose, and can possibly result in hypoglycemia.
  4. Take doctor prescribed insulin regularly, and on time!
  5. Attend all laboratory tests and doctors' appointments.
  6. Have your hemoglobin A1c test done every 3 months or as directed by your physician. Aim for a value of 6.5% or less as recommended by the American Diabetes Association. This test measures your average blood sugar levels over a period of 2-3 months and is a strong indicator of overall glycemic control.
  7. Stop smoking! Smoking raises blood sugar levels, damages blood vessels which can lead to heart disease and stroke, and adversely affects circulation due to constriction of blood vessels. Heart disease, stroke, and circulation problems are frequent complications of diabetes, even in non-smokers; a diabetic smoker is "adding fuel to the fire", greatly increasing his or her risk of developing these complications.
  8. Be prepared for hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. These conditions are more common in patients taking insulin, but can occur in other situations.
    • Hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar, occurs when the blood sugar level is above 126mg/dL (7mmol/L). It can occur as a result of stress, insufficient insulin, too much food, or an issue with oral diabetes medication. Symptoms include frequent thirst, frequent urination, unusual hunger, fatigue, and irritability. Untreated hyperglycemia is a leading cause of complications from diabetes, thus it is important to recognize and treat hyperglycemia as directed by your physician. Treatment includes adjusting insulin treatment (frequently, patients using insulin will simply take a correction shot based on the level of their blood sugar), or adjusting oral medications. While patients taking insulin will typically adjust their insulin dosages to lower blood sugar, patients taking oral medication or patients using diet or exercise will typically have to adjust their carbohydrate intake to control blood sugar. Untreated hyperglycemia can rapidly progress into diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), which is life-threating and frequently requires hospitalization. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, unquenchable thirst, diarrhea, and muscle cramps. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms of DKA, SEEK URGENT MEDICAL ATTENTION.
    • Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, occurs when the blood sugar level is below 70mg/dL (3.9mmol/L). It can occur as a result of stress, too much insulin, too little food, or an issue with oral diabetes medication. Symptoms include shakiness, tremor, rapid heart beat, sweating, and clamminess. Untreated hypoglycemia can rapidly progress into seizures, coma, or death; thus, it is very important that hypoglycemia is quickly recognized and treated as directed by your physician. In any situation where the patient believes that he or she is suffering from hypoglycemia, the patient should confirm with a blood sugar test; however, the patient should treat immediately if they feel that the hypoglycemia is severe and it would take too long to test. Treating the low blood sugar is paramount. Mild hypoglycemia can be treated by the patient and usually involves consuming 15 grams of carbohydrates, in the form of sugary (not diet) soda, juice, glucose tablets/gel, or occasionally a small snack in the form of crackers, pretzels, hard candy, etc. It is important to note that candy bars such as Snickers, Twix, Milky Way, etc. contain a high amount of fat and can slow the absorption of sugar from the candy bar; therefore, it is not advised that patients use high-fat candy bars to treat hypoglycemia as the blood sugars may not rise fast enough to prevent any further and possibly severe drops in blood sugar. Once the patient has treated, they should wait 10-15 minutes and test his or her blood sugar to confirm that blood sugar levels have risen above 70mg/dL (3.9mmol/L). If the blood sugar levels are still below 70mg/dL (3.9mmol/L), the patient should repeat the treatment process, and if upon testing again after 10-15 minutes blood sugar levels are still below 70mg/dL (3.9mmol/L), the patient should treat once again and consult his/her physician immediately. If the patient has a meal planned within the next 30 minutes, the patient should continue as normal and continue to monitor his or her blood glucose to check for any additional episodes of hypoglycemia. If his/her next meal is beyond 30 minutes, the patient should consume a small snack (1/2 of a sandwich and an 8oz glass of milk, or a pack of peanut butter crackers). Severe hypoglycemia is an urgent medical condition that requires immediate intervention, and can frequently require intervention from a third-party. It can occur when blood sugars fall very rapidly, or when the patient suffers from hypoglycemia unawareness. Severe hypoglycemia can result in fainting, seizures, or death. Treatment may or may not be possible by the patient themselves due to significant impairment, however, the main idea is still the same: raise blood sugar levels as rapidly as possible. This can be achieved using oral carbohydrates, but in a situation where a patient is unconscious, unable to swallow, or having a seizure, outside intervention is necessary. Two types of injections are used to treat severe hypoglycemia: glucagon and intravenous dextrose solution (D50). Glucagon is a hormone produced in the body that acts an opposite to insulin; it blocks the blood sugar lowering ability of insulin and stimulates the liver to release glucose into the blood from energy reserves. When used as treatment for severe hypoglycemia, the solution is injected intramuscularly and produces results in 1-2 minutes. The patient will typically feel nauseated and may vomit shortly after injection. However, this treatment is ineffective if the liver is depleted of glucose stores and in such cases, intravenous dextrose (sugar) solution is necessary. IV dextrose will awaken an unconscious person whom is suffering from severe hypoglycemia in seconds. IV dextrose is commonly referred to as "D50" by emergency medical technicians and paramedics.

Tips

  • Always follow your doctor's prescriptions and guidelines, including, but not limited to: checking blood sugar as directed, taking insulin/medication as directed, following a meal schedule if necessary, and attending all doctors' appointments and laboratory tests.
  • Regular eye, kidney, and foot checkups are advisable.
  • Communication with one's health care professional is essential in developing an effective treatment plan for diabetes; by working together with one's health team, a diabetic is much better prepared to handle the illness.
  • Have and know how to use a glucagon emergency kit, and instruct family members and roommates on how to use it. It may save your life if you have severe low blood sugar and are unconscious. The paramedics may not arrive in time.

Warnings

  • This is not a substitute for professional medical care.
  • If you have "cotton-mouth" and are urinating frequently, you may be in ketoacidosis: seek urgent medical attention!
  • If you feel faint/lightheaded, have a quickened heart rate, and are clammy, you may be having an insulin reaction - immediately treat for hypoglycemia as directed by your physician.

How To-39: "How to Be More Aware of Your Health"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

You have a mind of your own. Doctors can't know everything. Perhaps some people trust doctors a little too much. They expect miracles and then blame the doctors when things turn out to be less than what they imagined. That's not fair to you or the doctor.
So here are a few simple things to keep in mind when you are dealing with medical issues

Steps

  1. Listen to your body. It's always sending you signals. If it doesn't "feel right" then it's time to re-evaluate your options.
  2. Get a third and fourth opinion on major a major diagnosis. For example, your doctor tells you that you have cancer. Confirm with another physician.
  3. Research your medical situation. The internet is packed with information. Go to discussion groups about your medical issue. Go to websites. Print out journals. Dig Deep. Why be in the dark about what's happening with your body? This is your life!
  4. Ask your doctor questions. This is why you pay the doctor. If he or she is worth anything, he or she will be happy to answer your questions and give you ways to find out more information. Some doctors use a sliding-scale fee system. They will charge more if you ask more questions. Find out the cost before your consultation.
  5. If your doctor gets offended or displays a overly-negative reaction towards your questions, find another doctor. You need a doctor in whom you can place your confidence.

Tips

  • Do regular relaxation exercises. This is simply closing your eyes in a comfortable position and breathing deeply while clearing your mind of any thoughts. This does not have to take long, five minutes can be sufficient.

Warnings

  • While researching your symptoms and conditions on the Internet, be careful that you are recieving accurate information. Many doctors and hospitals have patient information sites to help you get accurate information; use them!
  • When looking at your own medical imaging test results, be aware of the specific language that radiologists use. For example, "metastatic cancer cannot be excluded" does NOT mean you have cancer - it means they can't prove you DON'T have cancer without other tests, which your primary physician already may have already done and is just waiting for tests results to confirm his/her thoughts.
  • If you want the drug you saw on in an advertisement, or have diagnosed yourself and just want it confirmed, be honest about it when you see your physician. They may not agree with you, but you won't be wasting thier time or yours.

How To-38: "How to Stay Fit While You're Pregnant"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Just because you're pregnant doesn't mean you can't exercise. Here's how to do it safely.

Steps

  1. Maintain. This is a time to maintain your fitness level with modifications. This is NOT the time to push yourself.
  2. Add some variety. Pregnancy is a great time to mix up the routine with some low-impact activities such as yoga.
  3. Know your limits. You should be able to carry on a conversation during your entire workout. Your heart rate should not exceed 140 unless your OB says it's fine.
  4. Communicate with your doctor and a certified fitness professional. Be sure to ask questions and let consultants know that you are pregnant. Often there are modifications to regular exercises that make them better for pregnancy.
  5. Keep moving. You must workout at least 2 times a week to get the benefits from exercise. And keep it going throughout your entire pregnancy.
  6. Watch your weight. Remember that your goal is to stay fit, not to lose weight. Losing weight during pregnancy is a big no-no.
  7. Stay hydrated. It's key to drink a lot of water before, during and after exercise. Remember, you're drinking for two. Consider carrying a water bottle while you work out.

Tips

  • Get outside.
  • Find a workout partner.
  • Find a certified fitness professional.
  • Keep it fun.
  • Eat healthy.

Warnings

  • Ask your doctor first.
  • Never exercise to exhaustion.
  • Do not exercise in the heat.
  • Know the warning signs for serious complications.

How To-37: "How to Prevent Pregnancy Stretch Marks"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Steps

  1. Eat a very healthy diet to nourish your skin (and your baby) from the inside out. Take your prenatal vitamins and eat the right amount of calories from healthy foods which provide plenty of calcium, protein, whole grains, and vitamin rich fruits and vegetables.
  2. Drink eight or more glasses of water and/or other fluids daily to hydrate your skin and maintain elasticity.
  3. Follow guidelines for gradual weight gain, in the recommended amount. This should be about 25-35 pounds if you're a healthy weight, slightly more if you're underweight or expecting twins and slightly less if you're overweight. The faster you gain weight during pregnancy, the more likely it is you will get stretch marks.
  4. Moisturize your breasts, belly, sides, lower back, thighs and anywhere else you think you might get stretch marks at least morning and night if you wish. Creams and lotions have not been medically proven to prevent stretch marks as they cannot penetrate to the deep skin layer where stretch marks occur, but they can help your skin to feel less dry and itchy. Cocoa butter, almond oil and shea butter are marvelous choices. Also wheatgerm oil. If you can find pure Lanolin, it works very well. If you notice itching where your skin is being stretched, that is a sign to add more moisturizer in that area.
  5. Continue regimen after you deliver until you're back to your target weight -- rapid weight loss can also result in stretch marks!

Tips

  • Your moisturizer should be safe and all natural, for your health and your baby's. Try moisturizers like those by Blooming Body, or make your own pregnancy stretch mark cream with cocoa butter, olive oil, and vitamin E cream (just squeeze the contents into the other ingredients, mix and apply!).
  • Consult a specialist; your OB/Gyn or a Dermatologist (skin specialist) may have some suggestions.
  • Wheat germ oil may help.
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning booths. Also, it is unclear if the ingredients in sunscreen can harm your baby as it develops, so if you are going to be outside, use clothing as your sunscreen.
  • Avoid allowing your skin to dry out. Cold weather and hot showers or baths will dry out your skin. You may need to moisturize your skin two or three times as often as you normally would during winter or if you take hot showers.
  • Even if you are prone to getting stretch marks (you already have them, or women in your family have them), don't get discouraged. You may still be able to avoid getting them to some degree by taking care of your body and skin.
  • Purchase pure cocoa butter from a health food store. Common brands found in regular retailers are not usually pure--check the label. The cocoa butter will be rather hard and solid, so grate some with a microplane or cheese grater, then heat it in a double boiler or a glass measuring cup in the microwave. Once the melted cocoa butter has cooled to just warm, gently smooth it over your belly. This is very soothing, smells wonderful, and helps Mom's belly feel better if nothing else!
  • You can only minimize the appearance with the constant and regular use of creams and other applications. The marks will only fade but they are still there if you look closely or touch the skin. All those expensive creams, oils and ointments can do is improve the tone and appearance of your skin and make the stretch marks less noticeable.

Warnings

  • Avoid using certain high tech stretch mark products while pregnant. You will find there are several well-known brands that say "not for use by pregnant or nursing women."
  • Similarly, if you are using lotions or creams to prevent or minimize breast stretch marks, be careful when you're nursing. You don't want the baby ingesting the chemicals.

How To-36: "How to Expel Mucus Without Hurting Your Ears when Blowing"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Ever had the terrible feeling when you blow your nose and your ears pop? Well, this how-to will show you through this pain, and even better solutions.

Steps

  1. Stick a cotton swab up your nose. This may sound very gross, but you must perform this step to see if you have a really bad mucus blockage. If your nose is runny, then you should be able to blow your nose a little bit. Note that you must not stick it up too far up the nose!
  2. Pull out the cotton swab and examine it. Is it full of nasal discharge? What color is it? Note these down on some paper, because it may help when you see the doctor. Now, throw the cotton swab away.
  3. Think of these questions:
    • Do your ears hurt when you blow?
    • Have you been blowing your nose excessively?
    • While you were blowing, is the amount of mucus little or none?
    • When you blow, and nothing or a small bit of mucus comes out of your nose, do you still feel like you are clogged?
    • When a doctor/you press your thumbs just under your eyes, does it hurt with a lot of pressure?

  4. Check to see if you have a sinus infection. If you answered yes to each and every question, you have a sinus infection or Nasal blockage. Your sinuses are by your ears, nose, and eyes.

What to Do Next
  1. Stop blowing, or at least blowing as hard as you do.
  2. Take a decongestant as often as needed.
  3. Consult your doctor and tell them of your results and symptoms. Get a prescription from them for your sinus infection. (Be sure to tell them of any allergies you have to chemicals and medicines, if any.)
  4. Take both medicines as directed.

Tips

  • You cannot get some certain medicines off the shelf these days, such as Robotussin and most decongestants, for some stupid people used them to get high in the past, so they took precautions. If they will not sell you your medicine, get a note from a doctor.

Warnings

  • Don't get the cotton swab stuck up your nose. That will just make it worse.

How To-35: "How to Perform Yoga Postures"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Yoga can help a person in many different ways. It can help you to find balance, teach you a way of developing how to be calm and can also make your body elastic enough to be able to move to its maximum ability. A good yoga posture can also help you to build inner strength.

  1. Stretch out on your stomach with your legs and feet joined in together. Plant your palms on the floor below your shoulders with the fingers facing onwards.
  2. Start inhaling and lift the upper body by gradually lifting the head first and then the chest, just remember to make sure that you keep your shoulders down. Your pelvis and thighs should never leave the yoga mat.
  3. Breathe normally and hold your pose for about twenty five seconds. As you breathe, make sure that it is in even breaths all the way through your nose. Then go back to your starting location and do it all over again.

Ab Strengthening Posture

  1. Place yourself in a standing position with your legs and hip width separately, holding your arms directly ahead with the palms facing down.
  2. Twist your knees and squat it will be as if you're about to sit in a chair. Make sure that your center weight is in your heels, then lock it and don't bring the hips lower than the level that your knees are at.
  3. Reach forward, center your eyes in a straight line ahead while breathing in and breathing through the nose. Hold this yoga posture for about twenty seconds. Then you should slowly go back to standing position. Once you are at the starting position you can release your arms.

Wind Relieving Posture

  1. Recline on your back, then as you breathe in you should drag the right knee near to your chest. Your left leg should be in a straight line on the ground.
  2. Push your shoulders and the rear side of your neck into the ground while at the same time holding your knee. Then breathe for ten seconds only. This may appear to be too quick but when performing this yoga posture it will seem a lot longer.
  3. Repeat the first two steps except change the sides. You will then finish the set by hugging both of your knees to your chest and holding it for another ten seconds. Keep repeating the set.

Upward Boat Posture

  1. Sit on the floor. Bend your knees and place feet flat on the floor.
  2. Breathe in, bend back and raise heels off the ground, straightening your legs as much as possible.
  3. Expand your arms with palms facing downward. If you find this difficult to perform, you can also rest your hands beneath your knees for support. This is a difficult yoga posture to perform but after practicing it a few times you will have less difficulty in carrying it out.
  4. Hold the pose for thirty seconds and keep your back in as straight a line as possible, and make sure your abs are doing all the work.

Tips

  • Your breathing determines how far you go into a pose. If it is tight and forced, ease off a little bit. If it is relaxed and calm, you can go farther.
  • Make sure that you practice these yoga postures on a regular basis. Not only can they improve your health but they will also help your backbone and improve your digestive system.

How To-34: "How to Survive a Heart Attack"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Each year about 1.5 million people suffer heart attacks in the U.S these, nearly 500,000 die, making heart attacks the leading cause of death among Americans. Indeed, if you live in the developed world, the odds are very good that you will have a heart attack at some point in your life. If that time comes, it's essential to act quickly to maximize your chances of survival. If you believe you may be suffering a heart attack, now, seek emergency medical attention at once. Otherwise, read on to learn how to survive a heart attack.

Steps

  1. Know the signs of a heart attack. The typical heart attack symptoms include shortness of breath, tightness or fullness in the chest, and intense pain radiating out from the chest. While these are definite warning signs, however, a large percentage of heart attacks are not accompanied by these symptoms. Instead the victim may feel any of the following symptoms, either alone or in combination with other symptoms:
    • Pressure or pain in the chest that seems to be triggered by exertion and which may disappear when you rest.
    • Heart palpitations or rapid heartbeat.
    • Pain in the upper abdomen lasting several minutes, often similar to the feeling of heartburn.
    • Pain or discomfort in the arms, neck, jaw, or teeth.
    • Lightheadedness, dizziness, fainting
    • Profuse sweating
    • Nausea (particularly in women).
    • A sudden general feeling of illness.

  2. Be prepared. If you have a history of angina or other heart-related problems and have been prescribed nitrates, such as nitroglycerin, carry your medication with you at all times. If you use an oxygen tank, even if only sporadically, carry it with you as well. Everyone should also carry a card in their wallet that lists medications they are on and medications to which they are allergic. This can help medical professionals effectively and safely treat you for heart attack and any number of other conditions. If you are in a high-risk group, consider getting a cell phone to carry with you everywhere, and talk to your doctor about whether you should also keep an aspirin with you at all times.
  3. Seek medical attention immediately. About 90% of people who suffer a heart attack survive if they arrive at the hospital alive. The high number of heart attack fatalities is mostly the result of people who don't make it to medical attention, and their failure to do so is often caused by their own hesitation to act. If you feel any of the above symptoms, don't try to wait them out. Call 9-1-1 (or your country's equivalent emergency telephone number) to get help immediately. While it's certainly true that the symptoms could be harmless, if you are indeed suffering a heart attack, your life depends on getting medical attention as quickly as possible. Don't be afraid of being embarrassed or wasting the doctors' or paramedics' time--they will understand.
    • If it will take a long time for paramedics to reach you, get someone to drive you to the hospital. Do not attempt to drive yourself, as you may suddenly become unconscious at any time during a heart attack. If you're on the road, stop the car and flag down a passing motorist or call 9-1-1 and wait if you are somewhere where paramedics can quickly reach you.
    • Make people aware that you may be having a heart attack. If you're around family or out in public when you believe you may suffering from a heart attack, let people know. If your situation worsens, your life may depend on someone giving you CPR, and you're more likely to get effective help if people know what's going on. When you get to the hospital, tell the emergency room staff that you think you're having a heart attack. This will help you avoid wasting precious time in the waiting room.
    • If you're on an airplane, notify a flight attendant immediately. Commercial airlines carry medication on board that may be helpful, and the flight attendant can also find out if there's a doctor on the plane and perform CPR if necessary. Pilots are also required to detour to the nearest airport if a passenger is having a heart attack.

  4. Take an aspirin or nitroglycerin if appropriate. Many people can benefit from taking an aspirin at the onset of a heart attack. The medicine is more quickly absorbed if you chew it up, rather than swallow it whole. Aspirin may worsen some conditions, however, so ask you doctor today whether this is an appropriate course of action. If you have been prescribed nitrates, take them (unless your doctor has advised you not to) at the onset of a heart attack.
  5. Take oxygen. If you have an oxygen tank, use it if you feel you're having a heart attack.
  6. Minimize activity. If you cannot get to medical attention quickly, try to remain calm and do as little as possible. Exertion will likely worsen the damage of a heart attack.
  7. Follow professional medical advice after the heart attack. If you survive a heart attack, it's essential to follow your doctor's advice for recovery, both in the days immediately following the occurrence and in the long term. Short-term care is essential to minimize the damage, and long-term lifestyle changes can help you reduce your risk of further complications or a second heart attack.

Tips

  • Occasionally heart attacks are not accompanied by any symptoms at all. These can still be harmful or deadly, however, especially since you don't get much warning.
  • Be especially vigilant if you are in a high-risk group, for example if you are elderly, obese, have uncontrolled diabetes, have high cholesterol, are a smoker or if you drink heavily, or if you have a history of heart disease. Talk to your doctor today about ways to reduce your risk of heart attack.
  • If you are present when someone suffers a heart attack, call 9-1-1 immediately. In addition, it's a good idea for everyone to know how to treat a heart attack.
  • Try and keep calm and cool. Use a wet cloth or some sort of cold compress on your groin or under the armpits to cool your body temperature. It has been shown that lowering body temperature even slightly increases survival rate in many cases.

Warnings

  • A widely circulated email suggests that you should perform "cough CPR" if you're having a heart attack. This method is not recommended. While it may be helpful in certain situations if performed for a few seconds while the victim is under medical supervision, it can be harmful.
  • This article is a general guide only and is not intended to replace professional medical advice.

How To-33: "How to Get Your Children up in the Morning"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Ever have trouble getting your children up on weekends? Have they been late for school because they refuse to get out of bed? If so, keep reading!

Steps

  1. Set an alarm clock. It should have a noticeable ring, but not deafening. Set it for the time they need to get up and put it by their bed.
  2. If they don't get up when the alarm clock rings, shake them a bit and say "rise and shine" "time to get up" or something like that.
  3. If that didn't work, try flickering the lights on and off a few times (maybe even to the tune of a song).
  4. If they woke up but refuse to get out of bed, try pulling the cover off of them.
  5. If that didn't work, gently push them out of bed.
  6. If they get back in, simply say "breakfast is on the table". That will likely get them up.
  7. If it doesn't, then push them out of bed again, dress them, and lead them to the table.
  8. If they go try to get back in bed say, "If you get back in bed your going to miss the bus, and I wont drive you if you do." From the looks of, it they're already tired as it is and probably won't want to walk or ride their bike. If THAT doesn't get them up and ready for school, nothing will.

Tips

  • You shouldn't do the covers thing if its really cold.
  • Make sure school isn't closed before you wake them up.
  • If they want to go back to sleep when they come home, let them. They had a hard day.

Warnings

  • Never wake them up before they need to be up. After all, they deserve SOME rest in the morning.
  • When pushing them out of bed, gently push them, and don't shove.
  • Don't flicker the lights on and off if your child has a vision problem. It may damage their eyes further.

How To-32: "How to Make a Warm Compress"

How to Make a Warm Compress

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

This article needs to be converted to wikiHow format as specified by the Writer's Guide. You can help by editing it now and then removing this notice. Notice added on 2007-11-06.
Turn on the heat. When you have pain related to muscle fatigue, a painful carbuncle, (what's a carbuncle you ask? It's a very deep zit.) or you've just got a "shiver in your bones" on "a cold and rainy day" Below is a tried and true, neat and tidy, safer than electric method for making a warm compress.

Steps

  1. Saturate a washcloth with water.
  2. Have a dry towel or pillow case at the ready near by.
  3. Fold neatly and place in a plastic bag with a zip closure.
  4. Leave the zip closure open.
  5. Place in the center of a Microwave oven.
  6. Heat on High for 30-60 seconds.
  7. Remove the hot washcloth carefully, and place on the dry towel or in the pillow case. (you may want to use tongs)
  8. Close the bag.
  9. Close the dry towel around the hot washcloth in the baggie in such a way that the hot baggie won't slide out and there is a single layer of dry toweling on one side and all the folds are on the other. Since a pillow case is much thinner, you can just wind it around till you have a nice little package to fit over your sore spot.
  10. Place the warm compress over your achy painy place.
  11. Say Aaahhh...
  12. Remove the compress in 10 minutes and allow the area to cool before reapplying. This is so the skin will not accidentally be burned. Usually the compress will have cooled by then anyhow, which is why this is a safer method than an electric heating pad.

Tips

  • Use on tired shoulders, legs or lower back.
  • Will help a carbunkle come to a head so that it can be drained, thereby speeding healing.
  • Use as a neck wrap to chase the chills away. (You may also want to add a nice cuppa PG)

Warnings

  • Take care when removing the hot baggie from the Microwave as it will be HOT and steamy.
  • Please do not heat the compress for more than a minute or so as it will become scorching hot and will melt the baggie.
  • Do not allow a warm compress to lie in the same area too long as it can burn. Shift it around slightly every couple minutes while you are relaxing.
  • DO remove the compress if it becomes uncomfortable. It is supposed to feel good.

Things You'll Need

  • A washcloth
  • Water from the tap
  • A plastic baggie with a zip closure (preferably)
  • A dry towel or pillowcase to wrap the compress in.

How To-31: "How to Make Turkish Tomato Soup"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Whether you're looking for a creative twist on tomato soup or you need an appetizer to start off a traditional Turkish meal, this recipe is likely to satisfy. This is also a unique way to enjoy fresh domates (tomatoes) on a cool, summer night.

Ingredients

  • 6-7 large tomatoes
  • 1 white onion
  • pinch of nutmeg
  • pinch of oregano
  • pinch of sugar
  • 4 small bunches of parsley (flat leaf preferred)
  • 1 bay leaf
  • three cups of chicken broth/stock
  • butter
  • 1 teaspoon flour
  • 1/4 cup of heavy whipping cream
  • salt and pepper to taste

Steps

  1. Slice the tomatoes and chop the parsley into very small pieces. Combine with the oregano, sugar, nutmeg, 1/2 tablespoon pepper and the bay leaf.
  2. Chop the onion into small pieces and saute on medium high heat with butter in a pan until they are brown/yellow. If you find that your butter is burning you may add a bit of oil (canola or olive- not extra virgin olive oil however) to raise the smoke point of the fats.
  3. Add all the ingredients of step one to the fried onion.
  4. Mix thoroughly and fry for approximately fifteen minutes on half heat, until tomatoes are soft.
  5. While you wait for the tomatoes to soften, heat up three cups of chicken broth/stock.
  6. When the tomato mixture is soft, add the chicken broth/stock and stir well.
  7. Put the lid on the pan and cook the mixture of tomatoes and chicken broth for about ten minutes.
  8. Take the pan off the heat, discard the bay leaf, and use an immersion blender to puree the soup until there are no chunks of tomato left.
  9. Melt a tablespoon of butter in a big pan.
  10. Add teaspoon of flour and stir it well to make a roux - this will melt in the soup and thicken it. For optimal results cook the roux until it reaches a medium golden brown color (the more you cook a roux the less thickening power it will have- it will also give it a stronger almost nutty taste.
  11. Slowly pour the soup into the pan with the butter and flour.
  12. Add the whipping cream. Last add salt to taste.
  13. Heat the soup on the stove and serve.

Tips

  • If you notice that the onions are getting stuck to the pan, add some butter.
  • Instead of an immersion blender you can also pour the soup through a sieve.
  • This recipe is perfect if you have some tomatoes left. Almost all of the ingredients are standard.
  • If you want more than four cups of soup, you can simply double the ingredients.
  • Take out the bay leaf before you use the immersion blender.
  • Make sure once the cream is added not to let the soup boil as this will cause it to break (the proteins and the fat in the cream separate).

Things You'll Need

  • An immersion blender or another way to puree (such as a sieve)
  • Two big pots

How To-30: "How to Take Control of Your Health"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

The amount of time you revel in wonderful moments of joy, contentment, inspiration, laughter, love and learning will be directly proportional to your health, happiness, success, satisfaction, productivity and fulfillment! Maintain a healthy outlook through the power of a positive thought!

Steps

  1. Cleanse the Soul. For the same reason you wouldn't go a week without a shower, you shouldn't keep a week's worth of mind clutter stored up in your grey matter. Do easy meditations daily in the shower to clear your mind, open yourself up to new opportunities and prepare for a simply fantastic day!
  2. Brush Up. Do a daily affirmation twice a day in the morning and at night when you are brushing your teeth. Say it aloud through toothpaste suds or silently in your mind, "I am masterfully creating my ultimate life. Success and health (or sub in what you desire) comes naturally to me."
  3. Be Active. Don't just stand around and let life happen to you. Every time you walk to the car, think about tiny actions you could take to move you closer to achieving what you truly desire. Keep a notebook to jot them down before you start up the engine. Watch each baby step start to exponentially propel your life forward.
  4. Dress Up. Just as you might think ahead or lay out your wardrobe for an important meeting or date, prepare your mind for important events. Focus on how you want to feel and set your intentions and be very specific on what you'd like to accomplish.
  5. Buckle Up For Safety. It's the law. Expect that you will experience life mishaps, tragedy, injury and unfairness. You can safeguard against emotional distress by getting in touch with your true self. Choose how you want to feel, how you would like to handle difficult situations and think before you let fear, worry or panic creep in. It's your choice.
  6. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
  7. Preventative Prescription. A vitamin a day keeps the self doubt away. Honor yourself and recognize all that you are. When something has gone well, applaud yourself and enjoy it! Don't dwell on what you could have done to improve it or what you would do differently next time. We all make mistakes. Learn and grow from them but remember to enjoy and relish in even your smallest achievements too!
  8. Bless Your Meals. Just as you might say grace or spend an extra moment going around the Thanksgiving table to express what you are thankful for, find the good in your life and be thankful for it. Adopt an attitude of gratitude at dinner time.
  9. Sleep Tight. Take your last waking moments before you drift off to sleep to focus on something that inspires you. Read inspiring literature, listen to soothing music or breathe in a delightful aroma. You will feel happier and wake up more content when you close your day with inspiring thoughts and feelings.

Tips

  • Use the daily rituals that you normally spend taking care of your body to also care for your mind. How important is your physical shell if you don't have a sharp, positive, encouraging and affirming mind to perfectly blend with it? Fill your mind with hopeful, positive and uplifting thoughts and you will bring about more success, abundance, health and happiness.

Warnings

  • Your days are numbered so fill them with more joy, smiles, fun and simple happy essentials that you can stream into your life.

How To-29: "How to Ensure That You Have Healthy Children"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Keeping your kids healthy through food takes some extra special attention to what you are feeding them and it also requires knowledge and planning to get it right. You can do it, provided you make it a priority.

Steps

  1. Remove all cooking oils; margarine; anything containing hydrogenated protein; MSG; added sugars (sucrose, dextrose, dextrine, fructose, maltose, lactose, sorbitol, manitol etc.); artificial sweeteners; preservatives and/or stabilisers and all “low fat?? or “fat free?? products, coffee, tea, cocoa and other drinks from your home, take them to a toxic waste dumping site and dispose of them.
  2. Replace the cooking oils with suet, lard and coconut oil; use only full-cream, whole milk. Eat and feed your family plenty of fat – don’t cut it from the meat – and fry in suet or lard. Serve internal organs: liver fried in its own fat; kidneys fried in theirs; pancreas (sweetbreads) and brains (you might have to find innovative ways to disguise them at first). Marrow bones and the feet of the animals or birds should be the base of your flavourings, not compressed cubes. Chicken skin must never be removed, and do not skim fat from gravy. Use pelagic (oily, migratory) fish and cheese often. The hoofs and horns of animals are rich in gelatine, which is also present in the connective tissue and upon which your body thrives.
  3. Keep veggies natural. Where possible, do not peel vegetables: wash well and eat them with skins, seeds and all. Do not serve packaged breakfast cereals; never allow anything that has been sweetened in any way to go down their throats. Pre-packaged foods are out: even frozen vegetables. Filtered fruit juice is a no-no: serve whole, or pureed, fruit with only the seeds removed. Use butter instead of margarine and give everyone a tablespoonful of cod liver oil daily in the colder months. You can mix the cod liver oil with fresh, full-cream milk.
  4. Keep carbohydrates low. Use fresh, raw vegetables, including carrot; onion (all kinds); tomato; lettuce; radish; pumpkin; celery; garlic; sweet peppers, cucumber, herbs etc. Beetroot; cabbage; cauliflower; cucumber and others can be fermented, which is a form of “pre-digestion??, but this should not be served on a regular basis. Fruits that have a high sugar content should be avoided, as they will upset the insulin balance and cause tooth decay. Nuts and apricot pip kernels can be eaten in moderation, that is to say, no more than about 100g per week. Cut out baked confections as they use flour and sugar. For special occasions, make omelettes with fancy, fatty fillings Never use margarine, oils or low-fat products. The making of real mayonnaise is a forgotten art: master it, but use sparingly or use dressings made with avocado. Bananas supply potassium and other minerals and can be eaten in season. Ferment vegetables as is outlined in the old-fashioned cookery books, some of which you will find, free, at www.gutenberg.net and serve as pickles. Vinegar eats at your bones, so stay away from it.
  5. Do not allow sweets of any kind. How do you know if any members of your family are consuming too much vegetable matter or are eating trash behind your back? Easy - they will begin to stink. People who have the correct balance of proteins, fats and carbohydrates do not have to waste money on deodorants or air fresheners, even in the bathroom, believe it or not! They do not fart and their breath smells fresh and clean.
  6. Be aware that different family members have different needs. Do the necessary research to identify differing needs.
  7. Be prepared. If you think that this is going to give you a lot of extra work, you are right: it is but it is worth it for everyone's health.
  8. Remember that milk causes excess mucus, so adults can safely cut down on it. Children and adolescents, however, can drink freely. If you become constipated, increase your fat intake, as your protein levels are not balanced with your fats. Dietary fibres are excellent for the digestive system – of cattle and horses, but since you are not a ruminant or a browser, have only one stomach and you don’t chew the cud and you do not solely eat grass or leaves, they have no place in your stomach.
  9. If you are a young person and you start eating this way now, do not be surprised if you do not put on excess weight; do not be surprised if you slowly, but surely, lose excess weight; do not be surprised if you have more energy than you can use; do not be surprised if your brain function goes into turbo mode; do not be surprised if you have little or no acne; and do not be surprised if your children are born naturally, are blooming with good health, have wide, handsome faces and never have to undergo orthodontic correction for their teeth.

Tips

  • Your body is not a simple machine, as the “experts?? believe. It is far more complex than they can ever imagine. It works in this wise: it takes the nutrients you supply it and ferries them to the parts that need them. If you are feeding it correctly, it will manufacture most of the substances it lacks from the elements it extracts from your food. Your body has its own atomic reactors that break down the food into its primary elements and use these to build the nutrients you need. Vitamins and supplements are only required if your diet is deficient - and if they are synthetic, there is no guarantee that they will work. Due to mineral depletion in the soil, we may have to resort to drastic measures to ensure that we take in sufficient nutrients, including sponsoring and working on special farms to grow organic food for us.
  • If you eat correctly, the chances of you suffering with osteoporosis, obesity, diabetes, anorexia, heart disease, circulatory maladies, dental problems, nervous ailments, stress, cancer and many other disorders are profoundly reduced ... and your children will be just as healthy if you feed them the correct foods.
  • If you eat a modern “healthy?? diet, your body does not have the nutrients it needs to repair any damage, so it makes do with the artificial stuff you have been feeding it. Since your body is unable to properly dissolve this junk, it piles up and causes blockages. Your blood vessels do not have the necessary fats and oils to keep them supple, flexible and lubricated, so they stiffen and harden with the plastic “nutrients?? that they have no choice but to use. The little cholesterol you now have cannot get through to do its job, so it gets stuck in veins and junctions that can no longer expand and bend in the way they are meant to do. You develop a thrombosis or have a stroke. Your doctor will tell you that your cholesterol levels are too high, but that’s not the real problem at all.
  • By the way, do you know how aspirin thins the blood? It kills off your red blood cells, the very corpuscles that ferry oxygen throughout your body and to your brain. It’s not your blood that is too thick and requires thinning: it’s your veins that have solidified from all the plastic you have been eating and can no longer accommodate a perfectly normal blood supply! Your blood only thickens when you are dehydrated, so drink enough pure, clean water.
  • One consideration that you must take into account is the very salient fact that our ancestors managed to survive for the past few million years without our “modern, healthy?? diet. If their diet was deficient, following generations should have suffered degeneration and mankind should have died out. The fact that we are still around after all this time must bear testimony to the level of health they enjoyed. They could not have had our ever-increasing levels of heart and circulatory diseases, cancers and other ailments. Facial narrowing, which causes tooth crowding, is a brand new condition, as are circulatory diseases and osteoporosis, this last primarily caused by oestrogen, used in birth control pills and injections.
  • Something is definitely wrong with the way we are living, and while pollution may have to shoulder some of the blame, our diet has changed so radically over the past century, and strange and new, incurable diseases, which have no seeming causes, have arisen. The “AIDS experts?? still have not been able to isolate the “virus?? that cause HIV or AIDS - and no doctor can promise you a cure for diabetes! More people die of cancer than modern medicine can cure: you have a less than a one-in-four chance of “surviving?? cancer and as low as 1 in 100 with certain types, despite modern drugs and treatments. Cancer, although not contagious, and despite optimistic predictions of a cure before the end of the 1980s, is “spreading?? faster than we have the ability to cope with it. Remember also that no doctor or pharmaceutical company will be foolish enough to give you a 100%-money-back-if-it-doesn’t-work guarantee on their medications or procedures!
  • Do you want a sure return on your money? Invest in a pharmaceutical company that specialises in insulin. Diabetes is on the rise and if we don’t do something about it now, by 2020 fifty percent of the world’s population will be afflicted by it! Diabetes is simply the body’s inability to cope with the amount of carbohydrate that is pumped into it: it is not only a sugar-related disease. If diabetics were to follow the diet I have outlined above, they would stop their insulin dependency for good and save themselves and their families a veritable fortune.
  • Detractors, remember my challenge: either accept and finance it - or shut your despicable faces.
  • Go to http://www.westonaprice.org/ for dietary advice, but make a special point of reading “Dirty Secrets of the Food Processing Industry??
  • www.nexusmagazine.com for various articles about health, foods and other matters. http://www.abc.net.au and navigate to ABC Radio National - Background Briefing 30 September 2001 - Drugs or Dinner: Marketing Functional Foods.htm
  • This has nothing to do with nutrition, but if your young children seriously and earnestly begin telling you fantastic or improbable tales, go to Carol Bowman’s website http://www.childpastlives.org Very attentively read her Press Kit page to get an understanding and insight into some of the things they may be trying to convey to you. At the very least, you will be able to tell whether their tales are real or just plain fantasy.

Warnings

  • Warnings:
  • Do not be conned by the results of cholesterol tests: high cholesterol levels mean that your body has enough nutrients running around to effect repairs, lubricate blood vessels and ensure the proper functioning of your brain, nerves, digestion, heart and everything else. Low cholesterol levels means that you are starving your body of essential nutrients.
  • If you suffer with arteriosclerosis or any other such vascular degeneration, your body parts are turning into plastic, thanks to the cooking oils, margarine, hydrolised protein, refined foods, additives, stabilisers, preservatives and carbohydrates you have been stuffing into it. Reversing this process may take some time, but you can start the repair by cutting out this rubbish, turning to natural fats and taking a tablespoonful of cod liver oil every morning. If you cannot handle the taste, too bad, get used to it: we are trying to save your life and ensure healthy children here! You must get vitamins D and A into your body. The capsules are covered with plastic and you will have to swallow between ten and twenty to satisfy your requirements. Do not be tempted to supply these vitamins in tablet form: your body needs the oil, besides which, the “vitamins?? in the tablets are most likely synthetic i.e.: plastic.
