Homeopathy-12: The Homeopathic Tripod
We were taught by our masters to think of a tripod as a base for selecting the remedy for a patient. The three legs of the tripod are: Sensation, Location and Modality.
Sensation, for example, is the type of pain: Stitching, Hammering, Burning, Dull, Pressing, Pulsating, Boring, Burrowing, Bursting, Cutting, Drawing, Cramping, Grinding, Jerking, Lancinating, Shooting, Sore, Stunning, Tearing, Pricking etc. Incidentally this should give an idea how thorough a job our masters have done in studying various remedies.
Location, Where it pains - Temples, Vertex, Occipit, Forehead, Entire head etc.
Modality: What aggravates or ameliorates the condition of the patient. Periodicity. For example, headache better by pressing, by drinking a cup of hot coffee, in the open air, by cold/hot application etc. Headache worse by noise, by exposure to sun/heat, by slightest movement etc. As for periodicity, the complaint recur at regular intervals: once a week, once a month, every day, at a particular time every day etc.
If you are able to elicit the 'tripod' from the patient, selection of the remedy becomes easy. Because the Homeopathic Repertory is so thorough, thanks to our great masters.
If you are able to get concomitant symptoms i.e. accompanying symptoms, selection of remedy becomes easier. (Our master used to call them the Fourth leg). For example, with headache, the patient always has nausea. Such well-selected remedies often given instantaneous relief. Many of us have come across such unbelievable results, which are nothing short of miracles.
Further, now one gets a clear idea, why sometimes ten different remedies have to be prescribed for ten different persons with the same complaint; the remedy changes with the symptoms.

Homeopathy-11: Cravings in Acute Diseases
Many a time cravings help in deciding on the right remedy for a disease. I remember my friend, Prof.Raghunathan suggesting that I read Dr Elizabeth Wright Hubbard's book, when I started learning Homeopathy. It was a great book for beginners. One of the things I still remember from the books is about Cravings in Acute Diseases.
She has suggested giving the patient what he craves in acute diseases if the craving has come with the disease. This often ameliorates the condition.
On the contrary, cravings in chronic diseases, if encouraged, only to lead to aggravation. For example, diabetics more often crave sweets, which should not be encouraged.
Many Homeopaths have found these little tips to be of great help in day-to-day practice.

Homeopathy-10: "Homeopathy medicines do not cure any disease"
True again; Homeopathy medicines do not cure any disease. Another master of ours taught this fact to us.
This is how he explained it. Homeopathy medicines play only a catalytic role. That is the why the medicinal content is so minuscule that you can express it only exponentially. For example, a medicine in the 30th potency means the level of medicine in the globules given is 100 to the power of minus 30. In other words, you will have to add 30 zeroes to 100 and of that, only one part is medicine! You can imagine 200, 1000, 10,000 and 1,00,000 potencies! 200th potency means 200 zeroes to be added to 100 and of that only one part is medicine! It goes on like this.
Homeopathic medicine only stimulates the patient's immune system and helps it to correct itself; then the patient's immune system overcomes the disease.
So 'Homeopathy medicines do not cure any disease' is very true.

Homeopathy-9: "There is no medicine for any disease in Homeopathy"
Yes, there is no medicine for any disease in Homeopathy. That is what one of my masters told us.
At that time I was confused and thought that he was joking. Then he went on to explain.
In allopathy, if you have a disease-tag, selecting the medicine is easy. But in Homeopathy medicines are prescribed on the unique, peculiar, uncommon, rare symptoms of the patient. Often you may have to discount the pathological symptoms. Suppose ten patients come to you with a complaint of headache; sometimes you may have to prescribe ten different medicines if their unique symptoms happen to be different. For example, one says his headache is better, if he closes his eyes and takes rest in a calm place. Another may say that if pressure applied on the temples, he feels relieved. Yet another may say it is better in the open air or if he takes a cup of hot coffee. Like this, you have different symptoms qualifying headache: what aggravates it, what ameliorates or relieves it, the location of the pain: temples, occiput, vertex, or whole head; the type of pain: hammering, stitching, dull etc.; time modality: occurring at regular intervals/at a particular times/worse at a particular time.
All these decide the selection of the remedy.
So it is true that there is no medicine if you just ask medicine for headache. This individualization is the crown of Homeopathy, which ensures instant cure, at least in most cases.

Health Tips-45: Six Meals a Day!
Eat six small meals a day instead of three big ones.
The notion behind eating smaller, more frequent meals is simple: Spreading out one's daily calories over six meals stimulates the metabolism, keeping it going at a faster pace and thereby burning more calories........
Excerpt from the article, "Six meals a day?" from NYT News Service reproduced in MetroPlus, The Hindu, Trichy, March 27.3.2010.
Grateful thanks to NYT News Service and The Hindu.
